This is music for afternoons where the sunlight perfectly touches the windowsill, as iogi has returned with an album that is straightforward in its loveliness. iogi’s latest follows his indelible 2018 debut the ceiling and 2021’s dreamy everything’s worth it. we can be friends is the culmination of an impressive career that’s already included over 17 million Spotify streams, as well as extensive touring with some of Israel’s most popular artists.
For the creative process of this new album, iogi wrote and produced its entirety in three months time, playing nearly every instrument down to the string arrangements.
“It was an interesting process, because I’m used to having my hands on everything,” he explains, while discussing how he enlisted outside help during the mixdown process from members of the Spanish band El petit de Cal Eril. “I was too close to the music, so I wanted other hands and ears involved in the process.”
“I always like to have a sense of humor in my music,” iogi says while discussing the overall sound and style of we can be friends, and there is an inherent playfulness in his songwriting—reminiscent of Harry Nilsson’s seemingly effortless songwriting and Steely Dan’s smooth elegance, as well as psych-pop contemporaries like Peel Dream Magazine and Unknown Mortal Orchestra.
