TIGRIS has been a Tel Aviv live music staple since the early 2010’s — blasting underground venues with jolts of Ethio-influenced funk and jazz. On their third LP, HOP HOP, out April 20 on Raw Tapes, the quintet captures that electricity on tape. The band self-recorded HOP HOP throughout 2019 in a studio they built themselves, assembling tight, infectious tunes out of sprawling polyrhythmic jams. Each of the album’s eight songs were recorded live: five old friends in one room, pushing each other to dig deeper and shake off any expectations. “When we jam, we’re speaking,” says Sadot. “And suddenly, my hands are playing something I’ve never played before.” That ecstatic energy is all over HOP HOP — and it’s impossible to ignore.
